AGAPE Reading and Writing Club

AGAPE Reading and Writing Club exposes children to a variety of reading and writing skills using children's literature, educational games and fun group interactive activities which reinforce concepts introduced.

Kids Reading & Writing Club (1-2nd Grade)
In this club, the students will enhance both their reading and writing skills. The mechanics of writing (capitalization, punctuation, and correct usage) will be emphasized as well as the parts of speech.  Persuasive and descriptive paragraphs and short compositions will be included in their portfolios. The students will be able to stand in front of the class and proudly read an original piece of writing.

In reading the students will build their comprehension skills by becoming stronger in the following skill areas:  fact & opinion, compare and contrast, context clues, predicting, main idea & details as well as inference. They will also read and act out simple plays, which will help build confidence in speaking before an audience.

Jr. Reading & Writing Club (3-4th Grade)
In writing the students will be able to employ the steps of the writing process to complete paragraphs and compositions. Students will also be able to write and read poetry. They will write several different types of poems including cinquain, haiku and a tanka.  Grammar and the mechanics of writing will also be emphasized.

In reading the students will enhance their oral reading through performing and reading plays as well as reading non-fiction works. The process of reading a textbook will also be one of the focuses. The students will be able to use comprehension skills in non-fiction reading.  The students will gain confidence in their abilities to take part in class discussions in their academic subjects.

Advanced Reading & Writing Club (5-6th Grade)

Students will be introduced to different genres (poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama). They will learn to comprehend, interpret, and analyze these literary forms. They will discuss and write about the literature and the literary devices (simile, personification, foreshadowing) used in each work. Students will be confident in discussing and writing about their feeling and words of literature.
