Jericho Student Wins BigAt Bronx Science DebateOn October 18, the Agape Debate Institute made the trip to the New York City Invitational debate tournament located at Bronx Science. Agape Debater Adam Pahlavan of Jericho High School saw a tremendous level of success in the varsity policy debate division. In this division, more than 80 high school teams from all over the nation competed for the championship trophy.

Pahlavan and his team partner Johann Yang, advanced to the “sweet sixteen” round of the playoffs by beating the 12th seed in the tournament. As freshmen, these young men, only faced juniors and seniors in each debate round. After a valiant fight, they lost to the 5th seed in the tournament on a 2-1 decision. This has been one of the best showing of any underclassmen team in the history of this prestigious tournament. Pahlavan also was awarded the 11th best speaker out of a field of over 160 participants.

This is not the first time this spectacular duo as won big at national tournaments. Last year as eight graders, they advanced to the playoffs at the prestigious Harvard University debate tournament. They have advanced to the playoff round both last year and this year at the Yale University. They are also the reigning 2012-2013 New York State champions in novice high school policy debate, which they won last year as eighth graders.
