Agape Leaders Institute has partnered with American Debate League to offer speech & debate program to all upper elementary to high school students who do not have access to a debate team in their schools.  The program is designed to  teach the students the fundamentals of public speaking and argumentation skills that will enable them to develop confidence, self-esteem, critical thinking skills, creativity, and leadership. Students will have a chance to improve their communication skills in a safe and secure environment. They will walk away from this camp knowing how to structure arguments, prepare debate cases, research evidence, write rebuttal briefs, deliver speeches, and refute opponents.

BENEFITS OF LEARNING TO DEBATE!

In one week or two, the student who participate in the debate camp will discover and develop the following skills: 
  • Confidence – Belief in themselves and their abilities, and the desire to participate in all classes.
  • Curiosity – The passion of discovery through effective tools for research, organization and presentation.
  • Critical Thinking – How to explore the world through the lens of an inquisitive mind
  • Communication – Oral & written skills and strategies for lively yet respectful discussions & disagreements.
  • Control – Eliminate the fears of public speaking.
  • Creativity – The desire to explore, create and invent. 
  • Camaraderie – Meet like-minded peers at tournaments and build healthy bonds of competition.
  • Leadership – Self-motivation and the ability to delegate assignments and manage peers.

SAMPLE SCHEDULE

Our program is packed with activities that will equip our students to become confident communicators from the moment they walk into the classroom to the moment they leave.

DAY 1

8:45-9:00 
Students Check In  (Students will be greeted by the instructor as they are ushered into the classroom)

9:00-9:20                      
Opening activity (Team building Ice breakers, speaking drills, debate games, and etc.)
                                            
9:20-10:45                
What is debate? (Students will learn that debate is a clash of ideas, not a conflict between people. They will also learn how debate can help them in the “real” world.)

What is an argument? (Students will learn the three components of an argument (claim, warrant, impact) and know how to present a complete argument.)


10:45-11:00                      
Snack/Break

11:00-12:00                      
Practice Round I (Students will have a chance to debate on a topic using the skills learned.)

12:00-1:00                        
Lunch Break (Students can bring their own lunch or we can order as a group to buy pizza, Chinese food, or sandwich)                    

​1:00-2:00                          
Research & Writing Activity (Students will learn how to research a topic and gather evidence.)

2:00-3:00                           
Practice Round II (Students will have a chance to debate on a topic using the skills learned.)
